Dear URPE colleagues and friends,
I am enclosing a link to a recent special issue of Revolution newspaper
devoted to the global environmental crisis. It is entitled “State of Emergency: The Plunder
of Our Planet, the Environmental Catastrophe, and the Real Revolutionary
Solution.” I think URPE members will find this to be of great interest, the
more so in light of this summer’s URPE conference and its focus on capitalism
and global climate change.
“State of Emergency” moves along three vectors of analysis:
1) The dimensions of the environmental crisis;
2) The source of its causes in the capitalist system and the impossibility of
that system solving the crisis;
3) A way out and way forward—a revolutionary society serving the emancipation
of humanity and guided by principles of socialist sustainable development (key
principles are set forth and elaborated) that could actually enable humanity to
become caretakers of the planet.
As a contributor to this special issue of Revolution, I welcome comments
and criticisms (send to raymondlotta at hotmail.com).
I also encourage people to make use of the special issue in classroom settings
as well as broader forums.
Owing to schedule conflicts, I will not be able to attend the summer
conference, but I am confident that there will be robust exchange, discussion,
and debate.
My best,
Raymond Lotta
