History
1492: An Ongoing Voyage (Library of Congress)
' 'The exhibition examines the first sustained
contacts between American people and European
explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600.
During this period, in the wake of Columbus's voyages,
Africans also arrived in the hemisphere, usually as
slaves. All of these encounters, some brutal and
traumatic, others more gradual, irreversibly changed
the way in which peoples in the Americas led their
lives. The dramatic events following 1492 set the
stage for numerous cultural interactions in the
Americas which are still in progress - a complex and
ongoing voyage. The exhibit is divided into six
sections: What Came To Be Called "America";The
Mediterranean World"; Christopher Columbus: Man and
Myth; Inventing America; Europe Claims America;
Epilogue.'

Women and Gender
Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM)
'The Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) is a
Specialized Organization of the Organization of
American States established in 1928 at the Sixth
International Conference of American States (Havana,
Cuba). CIM was the first official intergovernmental
agency in the world created expressly to ensure
recognition of the civil and political rights of
women. As such, it has played a crucial role in making
the participation and support of women a legitimate
and indispensable part of governance and international
consensus building in the Americas. Through its
delegates in each country, CIM provides support and
recognition to national women's movements—at
governmental level, with NGOs, and with grassroots
organizations. Similarly, the existence of CIM, with
its influential role within the OAS, represents
support for women's movements throughout the Americas
and helps to foster inter-American cooperation.'
