The School of the Americas, US-Sponsored Repression and
The Struggle to Build a New World in Guatemala: November 20-28, 2010

The US Army School of the
Americas (SOA) played a lead role in the Guatemala Civil War, in
particular the late 1970s and early 1980s when even the United Nations
had to admit that the US supported genocide in the Central American
nation. Today the SOA has a new name and a slightly different public
relations campaign. Has its core mission changed? What are SOA grads
doing in Guatemala today? In what other ways is the US supporting
repression in Guatemala? We will explore these questions primarily by
living and sharing with communities, individuals and organizations that
are trying to build a new world in Guatemala, one based on social
justice, peace and dignity for all. How is the Campaign for a Guatemala
without Hunger affected by the SOA? Because these goals are at odds
with the goals of the US government, they often find themselves targets.
