The US government did, and when those disgustingly pesky truthful
headlines in the mainstream news (Reuters in this case) read: "Oil
sheen spreads from platform after fire" the US government applied
ample quantities of Sheen-B-Gone to the story and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!.

Just a few short hours later that same link's headline read: "No sign
of oil after Gulf platform fire: Coast Guard", or anything else that
soothed the savage citizen's mind.
