Dogged recently by war-crimes allegations, former U. S. secretary of
state Condoleezza Rice was given a warm Calgary reception this week.

Rice hinted the record of the Bush administration she served would
some day be seen in a better light.

"Today's headlines and history's judgment are rarely the same," she
told about 1,100 guests at a $500-a-plate launch of the University of
Calgary's public policy school.

She expressed gratitude to Canada for its deployment in Afghanistan.

"I know how hard it is to see men and women cut down in the prime of
life," she said in a 30-minute speech marked by two standing ovations.

"I just want to say one thing to you as people of Canada ... thank
you, thank you, thank you for what you've done in Afghanistan," she
said.

Alberta premier Ed Stelmach met privately with Rice, and said they
discussed the environment and hockey, as well as foreign policy and
how his government should deal with U. S. President Barack Obama on
climate change.

"She suggested we follow through on meeting with governors who are
important in energy-producing states and also working with the Obama
administration similar to what we're doing," Stelmach told reporters.

"And also we should share the fact that affordable energy is key to
both the United States and Canada in building our economy.

Outside the Hyatt, police closely watched about 20 protestors who
demanded they arrest Rice for war crimes.
