Hedges makes a number of very good points in this article. But it's a case
of cleverly seeing symptoms and not addressing the disease; Hedges falls down
in a very big way with the article's above quoted ending, his entire premise
of why the US is in Afghanistan.

The US doesn't give a rat's ass about Al Queda and that's not the reason
we're there. The US is in Afghanistan to implement its "Silk Road Strategy".

By not addressing the entire disease, Hedges sets himself up to fail based
on "national security" arguments levelled by hawks. And he fails to even
begin to counter the imperialism and militarism that is the core of US
foreign policy.
