205th Anniversary of Haitian Independence Celebrated in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 14 (acn) The ambassador of the Republic of Haiti in
Cuba, Jean Victor Jeneus, and the first vice-president of the Cuban
Friendship Institute (ICAP), Enrique Román, presided over the
celebrations for the 205th anniversary of Haiti’s independence on
Tuesday in this capital.

Also present at the celebration were representatives from the Central
Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Cuba, and leaders from
grass-root and political organizations.

During the activity, held at ICAP’s Friendship House, Román said that on
January 1st, 1804, with the independence of the Haitian nation, the
foundations of the anti-colonial victories of countries under slavery in
the Americas were laid.

“History is capricious, and made it coincide, on two January Firsts,
also the triumph of our countries’ independence”, said the vice-
president, and pointed out that “the ranks of Cuban soldiers fighting
for the liberation of the archipelago also nurtured from fraternal Haiti
and its descendants”.

Likewise, Jean Victor Jeneus made reference to the current situation of
bilateral relations, and listed the missions Cubans have fulfilled and
are fulfilling in the Caribbean sister nation.

Since diplomatic relations were re-established on January 6, 1996,
Cuba’s selfless cooperation with Haiti has been faithful to the thinking
of national heroes like Toussaint Louverture, Jean Jacques Dessaline,
and Jean Christophe Pétion, stressed the ambassador.
