As Americans get ready to gorge on turkey and trimmings tomorrow,
children in Haiti are facing mass starvation. A series of deadly
storms battered crops and livestock on the impoverished island this
summer, worsening the existing food crisis. UNICEF estimated that
300,000 children are at risk of severe malnutrition as a result.
Unknown numbers have died across the country of starvation and many
more are at risk of dying, particularly in inaccessible hilly regions.
In fact, last month, 26 children reportedly died in the southeastern
village of Baie d’Orange from severe malnutrition. The dangers facing
Haitian youth were in the news recently after the collapse of a school
that killed 100 and injured over 150. More unsafe buildings weakened
by storms are expected to collapse in the coming months and years.
Still, the danger of malnutrition tops the list of dangers. Doctors
Without Borders, which is on the ground in Haiti, trying to provide
treatment and aid to children, says the situation is “extremely,
extremely fragile and dangerous.”
