shocked to learn that your communities were not notified of plans to explore
for uranium before forest was cleared and blasting began. We are outraged to
learn that AAFN Spokesperson and Negotiator Robert Lovelace is facing 6
months incarceration and tens of thousands of dollars in fines for upholding
Algonquin law on Algonquin homeland.
We support calls to immediately drop charges against the AAFN, to free
political prisoner Robert Lovelace and to withdraw all fines imposed on the
AAFN.
We urge the province of Ontario to work with Indigenous peoples to undertake
immediate reform of provincial laws and policies that fail to respect and
uphold the duty of meaningful consultation, accommodation and consent. The
province must also take urgent measures to address conflicts arising from
its past failures that oppress and deny Indigenous peoples their rights.
