I am indeed referring to Martin King's Nobel Peace Prize. It was =
known long before he actually received it that there was strong =
liklihood that he'd get it -- a feeling especially pronounced after the =
March on Washington at the end of August, 1963. Not very long at all =
after that I attended the SCLC convention -- where I heard a good deal. =
One dimension involved the growing concern by the Kennedys at Martin =
King's rapid emergence as an international figure. [And not long after =
JFK's death, King was named Time's 1963 Man of the Year.]
I should add that the organization for which I was the Field =
Organizer -- the leftist Southern Conference Educational Fund -- had a =
somewhat inter-locking relationship with SCLC. A couple of examples: =
Fred Shuttleworth was a top SCLC official [National Secretary], soon to =
become SCEF president as well; C.T. Vivian, SCLC's Director of =
Affiliates, was also one of our key board members. There were others.
Regardless of public appearances, there was a great deal of =
justifiable suspicion in civil rights organizations about the Kennedys =
-- though less in the national eschelons of NAACP than, say, in SCLC or =
SCEF or CORE or SNCC. [I use the term, "Kennedys", to include such =
people as John Doar of the Justice Department.]
I could say more, Cornet, but this should put matters into =
satisfactory perspective.
Yours, H
