This is why the truck convoys through Pakistan take on a new
signficance. Putin has told the US to go f- itself over northern
routs, and the US military has to supply an occupation in a huge but
landlocked country (the main reason places like Bolivia don't get
invaded, even though it has strategic mineral deposits).
This will be the first foreign policy crisis of the hard-right
Demoncrat administration Obama hopes to manage. The US can fairly
easily double its troop presence, but light infantry flying around in
helicopters won't allow them to control the country and there is much
less infrastrucure than Iraq for them to run their lead-plated Rat
Patrol Apocalypse Wagons on. Meanwhile, the Iraq occupation will drag
on, as Americans do not get health care or adequate retirement, and
the economy sinks still further....
