Let me see if I have got this right. Many members of the Senate,
including some Republicans, want the A.G. nominee to affirm that he
thinks waterboarding and other such techniques of interrogation is
torture EVEN WHILE the US military and intelligence services most
likely are EVEN NOW using such techniques. Moreover, we are asked to
pretend that the torture of suspects is a larger ethical issue than
the huge number of deaths, injuries, property damage--as well as the
refugee crises in Jordan, Syria and Iran--that the US military and
intelligence services (including the military arms of the State Dept.)
have caused in Iraq and Afghanistan (and supported Israel in doing in
Lebanon, still yet again).
Talk about some weird priorities. Talk about cognitive dissonance.
Talk about the use of discourse to keep people from thinking about
what reality is.
Is it any wonder most people who say they still believe in 'this
system' really can't think straight.
