Well it has bee a has been almost a month(minus 5 days that I took off to
spend time with my friend) that I have been in Banff working for my
friends(strangly enough I am good friends with these capitalists)who own the 2
subways in bannf and one in Canmore. I am worked like a slave, but with that
being said, I did ask for all the hours I could get. I need to pay off my
mosaik mastercard.I reacently had what I think was a good visit with a freind
of mine who has been overseas for more then a year. While she was visitibg
me,she sugested that I was being a hypocrite for working at subway while
professing to be against multinational franchises.Even though I was taken
aback by this suggestion, I did not just let it fly in one ear and out the
other.I decided to take a criticle look at my position before I came up with
an opinion on weather my friend was right or wrong.I have for some time
believed that democracy is upheld by critizism, not trust;unlike some who think
being criticle is being hostile.
In order for me to be criticle of my friends accusation, I not only had to
deeply contemplate the accusations made against me,but I also had to know the
correct denfinition of the word hypocrite.so here it is
Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have beliefs, virtues and feelings that
one does not truly possess. The word derives from the late Latin hypocrisis
and Greek hupokrisis both meaning play-acting or pretence. The word is
arguably derived from hypo- meaning small, + krinein meaning to decide/to
dispute. A classic example of a hypocritical act is to denounce another for
carrying out some action whilst carrying out the same action oneself.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypocrite
In order to answer the question of weather I am a hypocrite or not, I have
to ask myself weather or not I pretend to have beliefs about Subway that I
truley don't poses? I don't think I pretent to like subway but really hate it.
I do smile at my customers and greet them kindly, unless they are assholes in
which case I will not smile or treat them kindly.Dealing with customers in a
"professional"( I hate using that word in this context, but for lack of a
better work I will)manner is hardly grounds for being a hypocrite;it is not
nessacary and is actually grounds for termination, of your job,in most
instances, if you tell all your customers how much you hate multinationals and
the capitalist system. Maybe I pretend to hate Subway while secretly liking
it? If you ask my co-workers and even my boss's, they will tell you that I am
not shy about my politics. I let them know how much I hate Capitalism and
multinational corperations.Do I denounce my co-workers for likeing subay while
likeing it myself?I think not. Do I denounce capitalism while being a
capitalist?I may work within the confines of the capitalist system, but that
does not mean I am a capitalist.I think the problem here is that the word
hypocrite is misused in many cases in order to,among other things, attack
lefties and anti-capitalists
Maybe my friend meant to infer that it was wrong for me to be criticle of
what I do,you know, the whole"shut up and toe the party line" motto. I hope
this was not the case. people that proclaim that you should not critizise you
employer are the same type of people who proclaim that you should not
critisize you country or the political party you belong to. I would suggest
that these type of people are nationalists, nay, even stalinists or might I add
quisi-fascist.My friend did tell me she has grown away from the "activist"
lifstyle she lived for a year or so, but for heavens sake,I don't think she
has grown that far away.I think maybe she was saying that as a communist, I
was being hypocriticle for working at subway. Yes I am a communist, weather it
be anarco or just plain communist,I am not sure. I know I have not read the
communist manifesto all the way from front to back but I do not think it says
there or in any communist works that a true communist cannot work at a
multi-national. I would agrue that their are probably hudreds of thousands of
communists that work at multi-national corperations. I may never know what
exactly my frient was trying to get at by suggesting I am a hypocrite.
Regardless,I think I have shown that I Aaron Doncaster am not a hypocrite for
working at Subway. I may be a dum ass for working such a shitty job when I
know I have the skills to get a better paying job but alas,I aint no fuckin
hypocrite!!!There now,I feel much better having gotten that off my chest.
                                                       Aaron Doncaster
