Ivins: Politics or Insanity?; Bush's Immigration...Bad Policy, Bad
Politics; UN: US Should Close Gitmo Facility; GOP Congressional Bribery

Cheney Pushed US to Widen Domestic Spying
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051406A.shtml
In the weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, Vice President Dick Cheney and
his top legal adviser argued that the National Security Agency should
intercept purely domestic telephone calls and e-mail messages without
warrants in the hunt for terrorists, according to two senior intelligence
officials.

Italy to Withdraw Troops, Calls Iraq Occupation "Grave Error"
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051806A.shtml
Another US ally in the war in Iraq distanced itself from the US-led effort
today when Italy's new prime minister, Romano Prodi, called the invasion
and occupation a "grave error" and said he would propose a withdrawal of
Italian troops.

Jesse Jackson | Time to Call Bush on Lawbreaking
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706J.shtml
"The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution protects the privacy and liberty
of Americans. It says the government can't search or seize you without a
warrant issued on probable cause to believe you are involved in a crime.
This right," writes Jesse Jackson, "is the line between a democracy and a
police state, where the state can search or seize at will. That is the
line that the NSA program erased."

Molly Ivins | Politics, or Insanity?
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051606R.shtml
Molly Ivins says that militarizing the border is only "red meat" for the
conservative base. To solve the problem, she says: "Make it illegal to
hire undocumented workers and put the National Guard into enforcing that.
Then rewrite NAFTA and invest in Mexico."

Marc Cooper: Bush's Immigration Speech Is Bad Policy, Bad Politics
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051606A.shtml
"The real mission of the 6,000 National Guard troops he has called out is
to quell the rebellion on the president’s right flank, the flaring mutiny
of his own conservative base," writes Marc Cooper. "Indeed, if the
president were being honest, the mobilized troops would be taken off the
federal payroll and moved onto the books of the 2006 national Republican
campaign."

FOCUS | UN: US Should Close Gitmo Facility
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051906Z.shtml
"The state party should cease to detain any person at Guantanamo Bay and
close the detention facility," said the UN Committee Against Torture, a
panel of 10 independent experts on adherence to the UN Convention Against
Torture. The United States should also ensure that no one is detained in
secret detention facilities under its control and disclose the existence
of any such places, the report said.

FOCUS | GOP Congressional Bribery Probe Deepens
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/052006Z.shtml
On March 8, 2004, after a private, chartered flight from Washington,
Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham checked into a luxury oceanfront suite
at the Delano Hotel, a restored Art Deco jewel on Miami Beach. Prosecutors
say the San Diego lawmaker, in town to shop for a yacht, racked up more
than $15,000 in bills during the trip, including $848 in meals.

One Out of 136 Americans in Jail
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/052206R.shtml
Prisons and jails added more than 1,000 inmates each week for a year,
putting almost 2.2 million people, or one in every 136 US residents,
behind bars by last summer. Arrests for drug and parole violations were a
leading factor.

VIDEO | Silent March Honors the Fallen
A Report by Scott Galindez
http://www.truthout.org/multimedia.htm

On Saturday, May 13, a silent march was held on the National Mall in
Washington, DC. Family members of soldiers who have died in Iraq were
joined by families of those currently serving as well as Iraq War veterans
who now oppose the war. The event was held in conjunction with Eyes Wide
Open, a traveling memorial which displays a pair of boots for every
soldier who has died in Iraq. Eyes Wide Open is part of ongoing efforts
by the American Friends Service
Committee (AFSC) to end the War.
