Baghdad.
US offensive gets underway in Baghdad massive campaign of raids,
searches, and arrests sweeps Baghdad's Sunni districts.
In a dispatch posted at 9:50am Makkah time Wednesday morning,
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation troops accompanied by
their Iraqi puppet army and police allies launched a massive
campaign at dawn on Wednesday, as they had announced on Tuesday.
According to Quds Press, some 41,000 US and puppet troops and police
as well as sectarian militiamen were taking part in the massive
sweep. Quds Press reported official spokesmen as saying that the
offensive in Baghdad would "concentrate on areas where there have
been a lot of armed attacks; areas that armed men are thought to use
regularly, such as al-A`zamiyah and al-Karakh."
The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local
eyewitnesses as saying that the campaign was aimed solely at Sunni
areas as US troops and their allies began raiding homes and
arresting dozens of people.
People with the long beards or short "dishdashahs" characteristic of
religious people as well as those known for going to Sunni mosques
regularly were being rounded up by the troops. The forces of the
Americans and their allies included large and conspicuous numbers of
Shi`i sectarian militias such as the Badr Brigades, known for the
torture and murder of Sunni prisoners.
When the Americans found more than one male in a house they would
arrest most of them, leaving the youngest in the home.
Iraqi puppet army troops, puppet police, and the Shi`i militiamen
were seen raiding, searching, and robbing and plundering homes,
taking not only money and valuables but even bottles of perfume and
clothing.
The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent was able to take a photograph of
one Sunni home ransacked by the Americans' Shi`i sectarian allies.

Campaign of arrests and repression carries on apace in Baghdad
neighborhoods.
In a dispatch posted at 1:10pm Makkah time Wednesday afternoon,
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation troops accompanied by
Iraqi puppet army and police and Shi`i sectarian militias were
continuing their massive wave of raids and arrests.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the southern Baghdad
suburb of ad-Durah reported that as of about 12:30pm local time
Wednesday, the Americans and their allies had rounded up more than
40 local Sunni residents in the suburb. The prisoners range in age
from 18 to 50 years.
The correspondent reported the Imam of the al-Mahdiyah neighborhood
mosque as saying that the wave of raids and arrests in the area was
still under way.
In the western Baghdad district of al-`Amiriyah, the raids and
arrests were continuing apace, particularly near the Muluki Mosque,
but no count of the number of prisoners taken by the Americans was
available.
Witnesses say hundreds arrested, puppet army reports say 3,000 homes
raided by late afternoon in massive American sweep of predominantly
Sunni areas in Baghdad.
In a dispatch posted at 8:20pm Makkah time Wednesday evening,
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that as of 7pm local time Wednesday
afternoon the American troops accompanied by Iraqi puppet army and
police and Shi`i sectarian militiamen had searched more than 3,000
homes of Sunni Iraqis in various parts of the districts of al-
`Amiriyah, ad-Durah, al-A`zamiyah, ash-Sha`b, as-Salikh, and al-
Ghazaliyah as well as in the al-Jihad neighborhood and elsewhere in
the area of the occupied Iraqi capital.
The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a source in
the Iraqi puppet army who asked not to be identified as saying that
as of 7pm local time Wednesday afternoon, the Americans and their
allies had arrested 192 people, as far as the Iraqi puppet army was
aware.
But in the course of a walking trip through the areas swept by the
Americans and their puppet allies, the Mafkarat al-Islam
correspondent found local people talking about arrests by the
hundreds. In one case even a mentally unbalanced person named Hamid
al-Khabal who lived with his blind mother in al-`Amiriyah near the
Muluki Mosque was picked up and taken away with the other prisoners.
At the time he filed his report, the correspondent said that a
curfew had been imposed on the predominantly Sunni areas just
minutes earlier. He said that American troops using loudspeakers
had declared that they would shoot to death anyone they saw outside
the doors of his house.
Sunni religious scholars issue Fatwa ar-Ribat, banning Sunnis from
fleeing Baghdad and abandoning it to Shi`i sectarian militias.
In a dispatch posted at 9:15pm Makkah time Wednesday night, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that in the face of a concerted effort by the US-
backed puppet regime and its sectarian Shi`i militias to purge
Baghdad of its Sunni population, a number of Sunni Muslim religious
scholars have issued an Islamic legal opinion prohibiting Sunnis
from leaving Baghdad and abandoning their homes and goods to the
Shi`i sectarian militias.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the legal
ruling called the Fatwa ar-Ribat ("the Fatwa of Encamped Preparation
for Struggle") was issued on Wednesday in the wake of reports of
wholesale flight of Sunnis from Baghdad, fearful of the bloody
violence that the Shi`i sectarian militias are likely to visit upon
the Sunnis under the protective wing of the American military and
its current operation to purge the country of supporters of the
Iraqi Resistance.
The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported Shaykh
Khalid al-`Azzawi, one of the 10 religious scholars who signed the
Fatwa, as saying that the aim of the Shi`i sectarians was to purge
Baghdad of Sunnis, turning it into a completely Shi`i
city. "Therefore the Sunni people are obliged to resist them and
not comply with their ugly sectarian plans aimed at expelling the
Sunnah and making Baghdad, the capital of Harun ar-Rashid into a
haven for ignorance at the hands of the followers of as-Sistani and
al-Hakim," (in reference to the anti-Resistance Shi`i religious
authority Ayatallah `Ali as-Sistani and the head of the pro-American
Badr Brigades militia, `Abd al-`Aziz al-Hakim)
"The Sunnis today must encamp in preparation for struggle in the
path of God," al-`Azzawi told Mafkarat al-Islam, because war is
being fought against them because of their religion and their belief
that there is only one God who has no partners. Whoever dies at the
hands of the sectarians is a martyr who we reckon as being with God,
and whoever stays alive will have great merit."
Asked about the special threat posed to women at the hands of the
ferocious Shi`i sectarian militias, Shaykh al-`Azzawi said, "there
is no harm in taking the women to a safe place while the men remain
in the house, if the man fears that he will be dishonored."
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam stated that the Fatwa ar-
Ribat reflects the reality of what is going on in Iraq as the Sunni
population faces a bloody offensive by US troops and the Shi`i
sectarian regime, military, police, and death squads backed by
Washington. The correspondent reported that Iraqis are bitter about
the silence of Muslim religious leaders around the world who have
failed to raise an alarm over the sectarian cleansing to which they
are being subjected. "They are busy filling their stomachs and
their wallets," ["al-kurush wa-al-qurush"] the local people say of
the Islamic world's quiescent religious establishment.
