Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 08:00:02 -0700
We Invite You to Celebrate
Dia de los Muertos
at the National Chavez Center
Who: The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation
What: Dia de los Muertos Celebration
When: Sunday, November 7, 2004, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Where: National Chavez Center, 29700 Woodford-Tehachapi Road, Keene, CA 93531
Why: The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation welcomes everyone to take part in our Dia de los Muertos activities, paying homage to Cesar Chavez as well as other adored loved ones who have passed.
Each year, Dia de los Muertos, a ritual to honor the dead, is celebrated in Mexico and in certain parts of the United States and Central America. In the United States and in Mexicos larger cities, people build altars dedicated to the dead. They surround these altars with incense, candles, flowers, food and pictures of the deceased.
On Sunday, November 7, National Chavez Center guests will be invited to participate in art-related activities, such as decorating traditional calavera de azucar (sugar skulls), papel picado (bright tissue paper cut-outs) and calavera (skeleton) puppets. Guests can take their art work home or use it for the community altar. Chocolate, Atole (a warm porridge-like drink made thick with masa) and traditional Pan Dulce (dome-shaped sweet rolls with a sugar topping of vanilla, chocolate, or lemon etched into a shell design on top) will be available for guests. In addition, a candlelight procession will be made to Cesar's gravesite. Guests will then be invited into the Visitor Center to view an altar show and to decorate the community altar.
