7 Days to Election Day: Urge Presidential Candidates to Support Landmine Treaty
With only one week remaining until Election Day, the presidential candidates are making their final pleas for votes. They are out on the stump urging people to vote and explaining their views on many issues important to potential voters. A common thread in the campaign speeches of both President Bush and Senator Kerry is how they will protect the U.S. from nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. While weapons of mass destruction are very important and should be addressed, both candidates are ignoring the issue of controlling weapons that are actually being used and continue to kill thousands of people annually. To the chagrin of thousands of survivors in United States and abroad, neither candidate has addressed the issue of anti-personal landmines.
The U.S. remains one of just 14 countries left in the world that produce or reserve the right to produce anti-personnel mines. While most of the world is working to build a mine-free world through a global mine-ban treaty, the U.S. maintains an arsenal of roughly 17.5 million mines. In response to this stain on U.S. foreign and military policy, the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines has launched a new creative online flash video (just one-minute long) about the global landmine crisis. The online video urges the presidential candidates to support U.S. accession to the 1997 Mine-Ban Treaty and then asks for you to sign the online petition that follows.

If you have audio speakers on your computer, turn them up.
Please view the video and then sign the petition. The goal of the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines is to get thousands of signatures on this petition before the election. After you view the video and sign the petition, please forward this link to friends, co-workers, and other networks of people whom you think might care about this issue.
