Haitian police surround radio station

Haiti Information Project (HIP)

Port au Prince, Haiti (HIP) – Units of the Haitian
National Police (PNH) have blocked off Rue Chavannes
in the capital and surrounded a local radio station.
Earlier this morning three Lavalas representatives
were interviewed on a radio program on Radio Caraibes
FM about the violence of September 30 where four
policemen were killed.

Former Deputy Rudy Hérivaux , former Lavalas Senator
Yvon Feuillé, and former Lavalas Senator Gerald Gilles
were heard on Radio Caraibes denouncing the violence
and condemning the police for firing on unarmed
demonstrators during an interview on the program
Ramase. Before the end of the program heavily armed
units of the PNH sealed off the neighborhood and
announced their intention to arrest the three Lavalas
leaders.

The police action was condemned by the management of
Radio Caraibes stating that it “harms the reputation
of the station and is an infringement of freedom of
expression.” In an apparent stand-off, the three
Lavalas leaders remain in the radio station as the
police continue to control the streets outside.
