July 1933 Philadelphia--Rightwing US businessmen [including
a number from the list above] set in motion a plot to seize
power from President Franklin Roosevelt: they ask a Marine
Corps general to lead American veterans in a fascist putsch.

Not widely known, the affair may hold a lesson for today.
Although the conspirators now lie dead their corporations
carry on!* This report (Press for Conversion! Issue 53) lays
out the setting, strategy, models, tactics, and main players
of the scheme. Its backers' pictures, both visual and
verbal, add greatly to the force of the account.

The 54-page summary hails four loyal Yanks who helped expose
this plan for a fascist coup d'etat. Heroes of the story,
they are the whistleblower--Smedley Butler, USMC (twice a
Congressional Medalist), and three authors--Jules Archer,
George Seldes, and John Spivak.

The chronicle notes fascist input to such institutions as
Selective Service, American Legion, American Red Cross,
40-hour week, Repeal, NRA (National Recovery
Administration), public transit, Lend-Lease, Marshall Plan,
United Nations, etc. #

* For example, "In 2003 it was revealed that the
International Life Sciences Institute, an international
'food' industry association, had infiltrated the World
Health Organisation to exert 'undue influence' over policies
on diet, pesticides, additives, transfatty acids, sugar, and
genetically modified foods. ILSI was founded in 1978 by the
