Subject: [ufpj-disc] Speaker coming from Iraq to talk in your community?
Ghazwan Al Mukhtar is coming from Iraq to the USA for a speaking tour in August!
Hosting an event with Mr. Al Mukhtar is a great way to educate and activate community members in your area. (tentative dates of the speaking tour are Aug. 2 Sept. 2)
Below is a description about Ghazwan Al Mukhtar. For more information or to arrange an event with Mr. Al Mukhtar, please contact Global Exchange Speakers Bureau at: 415-575-5542 or 800-497-1994 ext. 253, june at globalexchange.org
GHAZWAN AL MUKHTAR, an energetic and charismatic speaker, sheds a harsh light on the motives behind the US invasion of Iraq while discussing what Iraqis are doing to non-violently oppose the occupation. An electrical engineer by training, Al Mukhtar sold medical equipment in Iraq during the Hussein years. He rebuffed requests to work for the government, and for his political independence was twice interrogated by regime agents. Although a foe to the Hussein dictatorship, Al Mukhtar was also opposed to the deadly UN sanctions on Iraq, and worked throughout the 1990s to get the sanctions lifted. Since the US invasion and occupation in March 2003, Al Mukhtar has dedicated himself to speaking out against what he sees as an attempt by the US to control the Iraqi oil supply. As a board member of the international Occupation Watch Center in Baghdad, Al Mukhtar has researched the devastation of the Iraqi infrastructure and the failure to rebuild phone, electrical and water systems. He is particularly critical of US companies such as Halliburton, which he accuses of outright war profiteering. Al Mukhtar was scheduled to tour the US this Spring but the US Government delayed his visa. He now has a visa allowing his tour in August. Through personal stories and hard evidence, Al Mukhtar demonstrates the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq. Topics include: Oil and War: US Motives for Invading Iraq, Non-violent Iraqi opposition to the Occupation, War Profiteering by US Companies, Human Rights Abuses in Iraq, Political Transition and the Future for Democracy in Iraq.
For each speaking event with Al Mukhtar, we ask event organizers to:
*Provide venue arrangements (time, location and equipment for the event).
*Provide hospitality for our speaker, including food, lodging if an overnight stay is necessary (home stay is often okay) and transportation to and from the airport or other events.
*Publicize events within your community and to the local media. (Global Exchange can provide assistance in this effort.)
*Provide honorarium and travel expenses for the speakers tour. We understand that some groups can provide more support than others. Our experience has shown that seeking co-sponsors helps to share the costs and responsibilities of an event. As we do not want cost to be a deciding factor in bringing such an important event to your community, we will work with you on ideas and resources.
Once commitments are made by local groups, we will coordinate and confirm the exact schedule for the speaking tour.
For more information about Al Mukhtar or other compelling speakers, what's involved in hosting an event, or to book an engagement, please contact Global Exchange Speakers Bureau by phone at:
