Repair signature totals show the Venezuela's opposition did NOT collect the 
required number of referendum signatures

VENPRES' Eulin Gonzalez writes: Patria Para Todos director and Comando 
Ayacucho member Rodolfo Sanz said Monday that "we have the signature totals 
... but we can't reveal the numbers yet ... however, the opposition didn't 
collect the number of signatures required to convene the (Presidential) 
recall referendum, despite trying as many tricks as possible."

Sanz, who participated on the Venezolana de Television (VTV) program "En 
Confianza," affirmed that an important political act took place. He 
believes that Jimmy Carter tipped his hand when he stated that the 
irregularities discovered (dead people's signatures and fake ID cards) 
wouldn't have any significant effect on the final repair results. He said 
that Carter's subjective opinion shouldn't have been made public, because 
he needs to wait for the results like everyone else, and the observers must 
abide by all of the rules, not just some of them.

Sanz said that a second important political act took place at the 
opposition coordinator's press conference at the (Caracas) Hotel Melia. 
"It's evident that they're not going to recognize the results unless they 
are favorable to the opposition. That's what Alberto Quiroz Corradi said 
after he left a meeting with Carter. I'd like to know Carter's opinion on 
this."

Sanz said that he'd like to "warn the Democratic Coordinator that they have 
a little more to lose, so they shouldn't follow the strategy of Enrique 
Mendoza, who is the big political loser in this phase.

The April (2002) coup buried Alfredo Pena, the petroleum strike swallowed 
up the industrial and union leaders, and this process liquidated Mendoza 
and the leaders of Primero Justicia."

Sanz emphasized that the international observers told him during a recent 
meeting that the outcome of the recall referendum process in Venezuela 
would serve as a parameter for constitutional modifications being 
considered by other countries.

"Therefore, we mustn't weaken or de-legitimize the recall referendum, which 
is new to Latin American constitutions."

Venpres (Eulin González): El dirigente del partido Patria Para Todos (PPT) 
y miembro del Comando Nacional Ayacucho, Rodolfo Sanz, señaló que "tenemos 
el número de firmas pero no podemos revelar la cifra aún, sin embargo, la 
oposición no llegó a la cantidad que requerían para lograr el referendo 
revocatorio a pesar que hicieron toda la trampa posible".

Sanz, quien participó en el programa "En Confianza" de Venezolana de 
Televisión (VTV), afirmó que hubo un primer hecho político de importancia. 
Cree que Jimmy Carter jugó posición adelantada cuando indicó que las 
irregularidades cometidas no tienen ninguna incidencia numérica en el 
resultado final de los reparos. Dijo que esa apreciación subjetiva de 
Carter no debió producirse porque él tiene que esperar los resultados y la 
observación debe remitirse a todo el país y no a un segmento del proceso.

Expresó que hay un segundo hecho político de importancia que fue la rueda 
de prensa de la coordinadora de oposición en el Hotel Meliá. "Allí quedó 
evidenciado que ellos no van a reconocer los resultados a menos que les 
sean favorables, esto lo expresó Alberto Quiroz Corradi a la salida de una 
reunión con el ex presidente Carter. Quisiera saber cuál es la opinión de 
Carter acerca de todo esto", refirió.

Asimismo, sostuvo que quiere "alertar a sectores de la Coordinadora 
Democrática que tienen un poquito más que perder a que no se dejen meter 
por el camino de la estrategia de Enrique Mendoza que es el gran derrotado 
políticamente en esta fase. El golpe de abril sepultó a Alfredo Peña, el 
paro petrolero se tragó a los líderes empresariales y sindicales y este 
proceso liquida a Mendoza y a los dirigentes de Primero Justicia".

Finalmente, subrayó Sanz que en la reunión que sostuvieron con los 
observadores internacionales ellos les decían que el desenlace con respecto 
al revocatorio en Venezuela servirá de parámetro para algunas 
modificaciones constitucionales que se han pensado en otros países.

"De manera que nosotros no podemos relajar ni deslegitimar la institución 
política del referendo revocatorio que es novedosa en las constituciones de
