>"I'd say all this puts him either in the center left or center right."

I'd say center right but the left has moved so far right that maybe it's
center left.

>"Yes, yes, I know. None of these folks would go for nationalizing the
>means of production -- although Nixon did create Amtrak and he did have a
>"New Economic Policy" (hee, hee). However, radical change is not even a
>remote option."

Let's not forget Carter's attempt at a slogan for his administration- "New
Foundations." Only Patrick Moynihan connected it with that famous old
anthem.... "We shall build the Earth on new foundations.."

>"The choice is whether we continue on the march to 1984 or we halt
>somewhere in the 1930s (1936?) in hopes of better opportunities for
>progress in the future."

Seems to me that the important aspects of 1984 are here and progress is
how we got here.

>"I, for one, deeply regret that Jimmy Carter lost his reelection, Zbig
>notwithstanding. It seemed clearer to bring on the struggle with a clear
>enemy. Well, we know what happened."

I regret that Carter wrecked his administration though a holy war with
Khomeini.

>"I am full of regrets about letting an aim for the perfect ruin other
>possibilities. I am not going to let that happen this time. I won't
>fritter a vote on making a statement that won't make a whit of difference.
>The house is on fire and Kerry comes with firefighters.
>He won't build me a deck? OK, so I'll have to wait for that."

American go from failed presidency to failed presidency without ever
wondering if the problem is the presidency..... and it is.
