Demonstration in Udaipur against sending troops to Iraq

There was a demonstration against sending troops to Iraq by Sadbhavna Manch,
CPM, All India Anti Imperialist Forum and others outside the Collectorate in
Udaipur . In his speech on behalf of All India Anti Imperialist Forum, Viren
Lobo mentioned the following.

It is now increasingly clear that America and UK are red-faced on their tall
claims that WMD existed in Iraq. There are even reports that the claim that
Iraq was on the verge of a nuclear bomb was false. All legitimacy for USA
and UK to stay has gone .

India has made the condition that they will not work under the US central
command and are looking for UN approval to be a part of the UN peace keeping
force. However there is no sanction from the UN for the same. However on
some pretext or other India will assume UN approval so as to clear the way
for its presence in Iraq.

The stay in Iraq has not been so rosy for America and Britain. There are
almost daily reports of ambushes and killing of soldiers. Do we propose to
send our troops there to die or to kill the civilian population of Iraq
which has been angered by the loss of sovereignty imposed on them by America
and Britain.

In the light of the above why then is India considering the US proposal to
send troops to Iraq ? The answer is not hard to find. A carrot is being
offered that ONGC contract signed with the previous Iraqi government will be
honored. Also India can get a share in the reconstruction work of Iraq. So
it is in the interests of the Capitalists and not in the interest of peace
in Iraq ( which can only come about with the departure of USA and Britain ),
that India is considering the proposal.

We demand that India drop the idea of going to Iraq , instead consensus
should be built of demanding the withdrawal of America and Britain from
Iraq. We also appeal to all peace loving people to build mass movement
against any move of the Indian government to send troops to Iraq.

Viren Lobo
All India Anti Imperialist Forum, Udaipur
