Despite US Green Berets, FARC bombs Colombia's Caño Limón again
The Caño Limón pipeline burning after being bombed.(2/6/2003 - OGI: Caracas)
With 70 US Army Green Berets and a contingent of 450 Colombian soldiers at
hand to guard it, Oxy's Caño Limón oil pipeline was bombed again today. The
780-km pipeline snaking across Arauca province from the Caño Limón Field to
the port at Covenas has been bombed innumerable times to harass the federal
government and the oil companies that support it.
The guerilla groups Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) and
Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) take turns blowing up various sections
of the pipeline as part of their ongoing effort to destabilize the
government and bring about social and economic change, sometimes with
physical violence as well. This latest attack on the pipeline appears to
have been a demonstration that the Green Berets will not end their
anti-government campaign. It occurred about 50 km from the US-operated
training camp and was the fourth time this year the 110,000 b/d pipeline has
been put out of commission until repaired.
