UPDATE: The Oakland School District just passed a
resolution supporting the High School Walk Outs there
on March 5th!
How To Do a Banner DROP
1.What is a Banner Drop? Basically it means hanging
your own homemade
billboard over or near a fwy overpass so thousands of
commuters can
see it. You don't actually "drop" it. You can hold it
with your
friends and stand there. Or you can tape it or tie it
to the fence at
the freeway overpass.
2. Scout a location for your banner drop. Choose high
profile spots
location where a lot of commuters pass through.
Overpasses are great
cause everyone sitting there in gridlock can see your
banner and get
your message.
3. Choose a Time for you banner drop. Probably want to
do it at Rush
Hour. Either morning or evening. That way the most
people can see the
banner.
4. Go to a store and buy some materials. You'll need a
white sheet,
some spray paint, tape or string. You can get all of
these things at
Target or a store like that. Or you can go to a thrift
store like
Goodwill and get cheap used sheets and so on. You can
also find spray
paint at all hardware stores and art stores. Art
stores are pricey
though. Think CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP.
5. Choose a Message for you banner. What do you want
it to say? Keep
it short cause you need to write big so people can see
it from far
away. We want folks to become part of the March 5th
Moratorium to Stop
The War. There are tons of ways they can participate.
A suggested
text for your banner is:
March 5th Stop The War!
No Work No School
No War
WWW. NOTINOURNAME.NET
It's really good to put the website so people can get
more info.
Definitely mention March 5th so people are thinking
about the day and
getting ready. Ideas for what people can do: use the
ones above or
make up your own. Students for instance would probably
want to
popularize the Walk Outs so that's what they would
put. Other people
might want to encourage people to call politicians
office on that day
or call in sick. We want people to take matters into
their own hands
to stop this war. Cross the line, wherever that is for
them. Always
good to get a "Honk if You Are Against the War!" in
there sometimes
cause it's fun.
6. Get some friends together or coworkers or fellow
students and make
your banner. Don't be a perfectionistyour banner does
not have to be
a work of art. Just legible. Figure out what site you
are going to and
plan to meet up. You don't have to stay there all day.
You can put it
up and leave. You can stand there and hold it up for
20 minutes or
however long. Whichever.
7.Make sure if you tape or string your banner up that
it is not in a
place where if it falls down it will fall onto the
freeway. Never
heard of that happening but safety first! People can
read the banners
if they are behind a chain link fence.
8. Take pictures! Just get the banner without the
people. The legality
is somewhat fuzzy so why plaster you face all over the
Internet doing
it. There was a measure passed I think making it legal
to post anti
war slogans since people had put up all those american
flag banners
and pro-war stuff after September 11th. But be careful
just the same!
9. Let us know what you did so others can get
inspired!!!
