German minister sparks storm for reported Bush-Hitler comparison.

BERLIN -- The regional Schwaebisches Tagblatt newspaper quoted German
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's justice minister comparing U.S. President
George Bush to Adolf Hitler for threatening war on Iraq.

Justice Minister Herta Daeubler-Gmelin told a small group of labor union
members Wednesday that Bush was going after Iraq to divert attention
from domestic problems, such as the U.S. economic slowdown, a newspaper reported.

"That's a popular method. Even Hitler did that," Schwaebisches Tagblatt,
which had a reporter at the discussion, quoted her as saying.

A government spokesman said Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder could not
imagine Daeubler-Gmelin had meant to liken Bush to Hitler.

"If anyone were to compare the American president with a criminal, they
would have no place in the government," Schroeder was quoted as saying
by the spokesman, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity.

"This shows what Schroeder and his Social Democrats really think of our
American allies," said Thomas Goppel, an aide to conservative challenger
Edmund Stoiber.

Throughout the current election campaign in Germany, Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder has defied America by opposing US military action against
Iraq. 

The stance has proved popular with German voters.
