AP. 24 October 2002. Police clash with teachers, workers in Honduras;
police, protesters, journalists injured.

TEGUCIGALPA -- Protesters clashed with police in front of Honduras'
Congress on Thursday and at least nine people were injured, including
three policemen and two journalists.

Protesters demolished a newly built barrier around the legislative
building and hurled sticks, rocks and bottles at police, who fired
rubber bullets and tear gas as well as blasting demonstrators with
water.

Police said that among those hospitalized after being beaten were
reporter Carlos Paz of Radio Reloj and photographer Mario Fajardo of the
newspaper La Tribuna.

The Popular Bloc, a coalition of about 30 leftist organizations,
sponsored the demonstration to demand pay increases for a broad range of
workers and against proposed regional free trade agreements.
