Just thought I'd share the lyrics to this song that I have been listening to
for awhile...I am not sure how many comrades have heard Sepultura- a "metal"
band from Brazil whose songs are critical of the authorities as well as
social injustices happening in Brazil at least--especially the social
injustices inflicted upon the aboriginals who live in the rainforests and
jungles of South America.
The song "Vox populi" [Latin = Voice of the People] makes me think alot
about what Marx had to say about the world [although they do not outright
say anything about Marx] and how one can approach nature and society in a
scientific and curious way and being able to see that there is problems in
the world, understands that there must be solutions to these problems. "No
social order ever perishes before all the productive forces for which there
is room in it have developed; and new higher relations of production never
appear before the material conditions of their existence have matured in the
womb of the old society itself. Therefore mankind always sets itself only
such tasks as it can solve; since looking at the matter more closely, it
will always be found that the task itself arises only when the material
conditions for its solution already exist or are at least in the process of
formation." [Marx, from the preface of A Contribution to the Critique of
Political Economy] In this sense, mankind sets out to solve problems with a
conscious mind and there is no problem that is 'impossible' to solve,
although this doesn't mean that all problems are easy to solve.
This song also reminds me of all the oppressed people and nations in the
world who do not have a voice-and this songs seems to be of the people just
waking up to social and revolutionary consciousness.
The song itself is from Sepultura's last album "NATION". The inside of this
cover has artwork from Shepard Fairey http://www.obeygiant.com/ and various
quotes from various people such as the Dalai Lama, Albert Einstein, Mahatma
Gandhi and Madre Teresa of Calcutta. I was especially pleased to see
Fairey's artowork of Lenin and Stalin, although I have no idea of Fairey's
political mindset-other than as an artist he sees politics as art and vice
versa and either uses it or exploits it. Sepultura seems to at least try to
rally the youth in trying to understand the world and from the way I see it,
one's role in the world.
