AP. 7 November 2002. Thousands of leftists march on Bolshevik Revolution
anniversary.

KIEV -- Thousands of leftists on Thursday marched in Ukraine's capital
to protest the president's economic policies, government corruption and
possible U.S. military actions against Iraq.

A march of about 4,000 Communist Party supporters marked the 85th
anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution.

"Down with the hated regime and those who betrayed the Ukrainian
people," party leader Petro Symonenko told the crowd at a pre-march
rally.

Symonenko harshly criticized Kuchma's allowing Russia to manage the
national gas pipeline system through a consortium deal, the lack of
sufficient social support and widespread corruption.

Following the rally, the column marched along the central Khreshchatyk
street to lay wreaths at a monument of Vladimir Lenin.

Meanwhile, a crowd of hundreds of Progressive Socialist Party supporters
marched to the U.S. embassy in Kiev to protest the possible U.S. war
against Iraq.

November 7 was one of the most important holidays on the Soviet
calendar. In post-Soviet years, Ukrainian leftists have marked the day
with protests focusing on economic hardships.
