A friend of mine in AA always maintained that her "higher power" was Leon 
Trotsky.

That said, it seems peculiar to North America that the model in dealing 
with alcohol, drugs, sex, etc., is that your choice is between abuse and 
abstinence (and it's an *individual* choice, abstracted from family, 
community and society). Everywhere else, they say "Don't drink so much."
