AP. 5 October 2001. Eight Swedes Sentenced for Rioting.

STOCKHOLM -- Eight Swedes were given sentences Friday ranging from three
to four years in prison for their roles in rioting during the European
Union summit in June in Goteborg.

The five men and three women were found guilty of violent rioting during
street clashes with police on the sidelines of the June 14-16 meetings
of the 15 EU leaders, according to court documents. All eight suspects
had pleaded innocent.

The court ruled that the group contributed to serious injuries and
extensive material damage by directing other rioters with cellphone
messages from an apartment that served as a command center, the
Goteborgs-Posten newspaper reported, citing the verdict.

Twenty-eight people, including 13 foreigners, have been sentenced to
prison in connection with the violence in which more than 90 people were
injured and about 560 were detained at least briefly.

Most of the 25,000 protesters who converged on Goteborg, 300 miles
southwest of the capital, Stockholm, peacefully demonstrated against
U.S. environmental and economic policies, the European Union,
globalization and other issues.
