while the danger TC points out might be a possibility, I do think that
elaboration of thoughts on the much bandied but quite less defined ideology
and politics of fascism does not have to be either sterile or strictly
academic.
I do agree to a great extent with the views of WL, but see the 'clever
characterization' of fascism as 'imperialism turned inward' especially with
the application of this to colonial rule as grossly inadequate (I do of
course note that this is not necessarily put forward by him as his own
position). In my view, despite the differentiation of characteristics of
'fascism in power' in different states, one of the common threads that runs
through them is a corporatist agenda, which forges an 'us' of nationality,
history or race, within the fascist state and its territory. In a colonial
situation though, the state is an representative of an absentee ruling
class, in a foreign territory and not even the French colonial policy of
'assimilation' comes close enough to that incorporation of as broad a circle
as possible of component social categories within the territory of the
colonial state.
