Much to his possible dismay, here's where I tend to agree with Mark. I do
think it will be driven by immigrant labor, and I do think it holds the
promise of creating a movement that learns something from its origins in
IMMIGRANT, WORKING CLASS struggles.
I think that the bourgeois order clearly attempts to resolve its enduring
conflict between means and relations of production by incorporating,
accessing new, cheaper sources of labor power-- African-Americans in the
40s, 50s, 60s; immigrants in the 80s, 90s, and this century; and it is in
that particular configuration of transition, from rural to urban, from
migrant to "landed" labor, that the real potential for class struggle
exists.
