Because CPM cannot claim credit for what is probably the most successful rural poverty alleviating measure in two-three decades in the state (and nation-wide). It undermines CPM's legitimacy as the party of "workers"...and in the context of Singur and Nandigram only further reinforces the sense that CPM have abandoned their traditional base. Don't get me wrong, Trinamool Congress are nothing but opportunists, and INC somewhat less so in West Bengal, but the point is the last 3-4 years in WB have been a disaster in terms of CPM's legitimacy.
