It is clear INC has a resounding victory.  For me one
the most profound issues is not the failure of CPM (which is
completely understandable and expected), but that once again
(as in 2004), the total and utter inability of mainstream
media in India to detect the outcome (or, perhaps better to
note, the mainstream media's complete capture by corporate
interests).  Outside of Gujarat and Karnataka, secular
politics dominates (Orissa is one further complication
though).  Moreover, the role of rural workers who see
more to be gained from Congress than the "Left" parties is
instructive.  The results in Rajastan emphasise
this.  The results in West Bengal (where the CPM state
govt effectively opposes the public works rural employment
programme of the Congress govt) demonstrate this even
further.  Ironically, my interpretation would be that
the result shows Congress strengthening its support amongst
working and marginal classes, the problem being that the
"left" parties are not seen as successful class parties,
whereas Congress has deepened its capacity to offer policies
akin to social democratic parties in Europe.  Given the
fall in strength of the left parties between 2004 and today,
the "left" parliamentary parties are confronted with their
most serious setbacks in a generation...they have no one to
 blame but themselves.
