In this connection it is interesting to read the entry for Falkland Islands 
in Le Petit Larousse Illustré, 2008:

FALKLAND (iles), en fr. Malouines, en esp. Malvinas, archipel de 
l'Atlantique, au large de l'Argentine, 2 221 hab.  Occupées par l'Angleterre 
depuis 1832, ells sone revandiquées par l'Argentine, qui a tenté de s'en 
emparer au cours d'un bref conflit armé avec la Grande-Bretagne (avr-juin 
1982).

and even more the entry in the 1978 edition, which I used in argueing 
against Thatcher's War with the Argentine:
FALKLAND (iles), en fr. Malouines, en esp. Malvinas, archipel de 
l'Atlantique, au sud de l'Argentine,  occupées par l'Angleterre et 
revandiquées par l'Argentine; 2 230 h.  Pêche de la baleine Victoire navale 
anglaise sur les Allemands (1914).

Public opinion in France is very different from the typical Anglo-American 
view - on this and on other matters, such as atomic energy and climate 
change.
