To clarify, Gary seems to be defining the Left punditocracy as
literate Leftists who engage in punditry as some kind of avocation (on
things like email lists, I guess).   That might be legitimate enough
for some purposes, but what I mean (and what's essential to the point
I was making about Obama) were those people who are professional
pundits--journalists, commentators, etc.--who profess to speak for
"the Left."

The particular group I'm discussing had a vested career interest in
the election of Obama or Clinton or any Democrat, while those of us
who merely had progressive ideas with opinions were all over the map
on the elections.

The entire point I was making about the incapacity of the Left
punditry to maintain the Obama promise without Obama's active
participation really makes no sense if I meant that Leftists who write
commentaries can't continue selling the Obama promise...since a good
portion of those never did...

My students, too, see themselves as supporters of Obama and they
listen to him...and pay little attention to MoveOn, etc.
