Great article in WSJ of 30-06-09 on Pilgrim's Pride closing a chicken processing factory in Douglas, Ga.
The company, filing for bankruptcy after loading up on debt to buy-out a competitor, has rejected a $32 million offer the factory, demanding $80 million-- despite its own appraisal of the plant value in the $40-50 million range.
Why? To quote the company, "...we need to remove chicken from the market. This would not be accomplished by a sale."
And:
"Shutting the plant was intended to improve the company's product mix by reducing commodity production."
