No, not exactly the same tactics. Not even close. In Venezuela, it was an
officers' coup used against Chavez.
That is not what is happening in Iran.
Certainly the US is involved... so what?
The issue for Marxists is not the election of either candidate. We support
neither. We do not support the government.
The issue is the driving forces that is below the surface here, and is the
actual impetus behind the protests-- and that is the economy, the economy in
all its social, class dimensions.
That these protests appear as "liberal" "democratic" and even more friendly
to the US is to be expected in this first manifestation. A similar liberal,
democratic, pro-West appearance was manifested in the struggle in the then
East Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland-- and in China in 1989.
But at core, there is a tremendous dislocation in the economy, a conflict
between the means and relations of production, and that means, sooner rather
than later, class struggle.
So the issue is how do we make this "economic," class root of the struggle
evident; how do we moved beyond the initial liberal, democratic protests?
And we certainly don't do that by defending government attacks on the
protests.
