II.
American financial imperialism entered into political antagonism with
German expansionism, as the external collision of two different forms of
capitalist imperialism and different form of the political state. American
financial imperialism expressed the domination of banking capital over industrial
capital (financial imperialism), as this capital sought areas of foreign
investment distinct from the securing of colonial possessions for the export
of commodities. A system of export of commodities, as distinct from the
export of finance capital properly belongs to a period of mercantile
imperialism or the direct colonial relationship. This social relation appears as a
political relations where the colonized are interlocked with the state of
the colonizer. The closed colonial system with its protective tariffs,
species money relation and garrison state structure impeded the penetration of
American finance capital. From the American stand point war with the German
state became the inevitable social consequence and form of inter-imperial
riviraly. In other words American imperialism had financial interest in
Europe tied to oil, bonds, financial instruments and a material/political
interest in destroying the closed colonial system.
Proclaiming its existence purpose the destruction of Soviet Power and the
destruction of the society impulse for economic communism throughout Europe,
the German state attacked its domestic communists and proclaimed its
military purpose to crush the citadel of ideological communism and socialist
property relations, the Soviet Union. In directly German fascism proclaimed
its goal recreation of the closed colonial system. Two very different
political states and economic system found unity of identity in halting and
destroying German expansionism.
The American, United Kingdom and Soviet governments entered a period of
mutual identity of interest based on military defeat of the German state by
the former and military destruction of the German state and physical
annihilation of political fascism by the latter.
In the bourgeois ideological sphere, the military battle against German
imperialism was waged under the banner of the politics of
"anti-fascism/anticommunist democracy," or in the American lexicon, "no fascism, no
communism, no Stalinism, only American capitalist democracy," or "the American Way
of Life." The Soviet government correctly ignored the American ideology
and proceeded to inflict upon the German state a most catastrophic defeat.
.
The economic platform of "anti-fascism/anticommunist democrat" was
finance capital. It’s specific class/social basis was crystallized in the
stability of what Marxist refer to as the "economic/political middle" in the
countries at the front of the curve of industrial/capital development.
The political middle is an economic formation. The rise of the economic
middle or the American middle class is tied to the rise of the industrial
system. Every person in America and the world remotely familiar with American
history has been taught that the "great American middle class" owes its
origin to Henry Ford Sr. and the growth of the auto industry. This is true.
Moreover, for eighty years the economic stability of the middle class as
pivoted in automotive production and its conversion into military production
during WW II. The modern social democratic foot soldiers of the political
middle, in their ignorant demand for reindustrializing America and
returning "our jobs" to "our country," as solution to this stage of crisis of
capital, seek to reestablish the economic middle and politically intersect
with and become part of the growing fascist onslaught against American
society as a whole. These foot soldiers can claim ignorance, but not their
leaders who fully understand the character and nature of their political
projection.
During the post WW II expansion of the economic middle the
"anti-fascist/anticommunist" democrats expanded voice of the left bench of financial
imperialism or the political middle. Anti-fascism/anti-communism emerged as the
most important ideological weapon of imperialism during the Cold War. One
of the ideological centers symbolizing the new progressive political middle
was the Nation magazine, which dubbed itself "anti-anti-communism,"
meaning in the American context, against the historic American fascist political
current that existed as a complex mesh of white chauvinism and
anti-communism + anti-Soveitism.
Political fascism and its meaning for today is not an academic discussion
but related to the politics of our new era: the era of Obama. The decay of
the historical/economic/political phenomenon called the
anti-fascist/anti-communist bourgeois democrat (the political middle) has emerged as a
salient political feature that constitutes an important, if not the most
important, political (class) aspect of the era of Obama.
The anti-fascist/anti-communist bourgeois democrat exists on the same
political continuum that is the decay of the peculiar phenomenon of the black
leader in the post-post Jim Crow period. The anti-fascist/anti-communist
bourgeois democrat and the peculiar phenomenon of the black leader merged with
and become part of the post WW II institutional relations that is the
economic/political formation called the political middle.
III
The collapse of the political middle means the collapse of all the primary
institutions of political mediation between classes as these institutions
can no longer stabilized the political and production relations between all
the classes in bourgeois society, post 1980. As these institutions
expressing real material relations of production collapse, the specific
ideology articulating this old material relations collapse. What come to the fore
is the external collisions of classes seeking to impose their political
will on society, as these intermingling classes seek a new ideological form
of expression.
The reason the political middle collapse is due to revolution in the
productive forces. The middle - economically and politically, is to be
understood as a historically specific class configuration. The collapse of the
American automotive industry - General Motors and Chrysler, means the collapse
of the pivot of the economic middle, but very few communists have pondered
the serious historical implication of this collapse.
Something has changed in our society that makes it increasingly hard to be
anti-communist and democratic at the same time. Communist are going to have
to be bold in explaining and educating our workers about the specific
nature of capitalism and cannot rest contend with ideological proclamations.
Why is the system collapsing? What is the role of government? How should
our society be organized specifically?
