In 1875 Marx and Engels also warned against "fetishing unity at all costs"
especially if it negated the ability of the working class independent act
politically.

Marx and Engels contradicted and "changed their tactics" numerous times and
are certainly not free of criticism.  But to respond to your first question,
*yes*.
