Re: Hammett's trajectory: there are various folks I can think of who
turned against the repressive agencies they had been part of and
joined one or another movement or became critics of imperialism.
Phillip Agee, Smedley Butler, John Perkins, Ramsey Clark, to name a
few, right off the top of my head. Pinkerton did remind me of some of
our latter-day converts from Trotskyism to neo-conservatism.
