Nestor,

I think your take on this misses the rivalries, divisions, conflicts 
internal to the amalgam of forces participating in the independence 
struggles.

Bolivar's vision of the greater unified republic did not come apart because 
of the pressure of the US or UK, but rather because of just those rivalries 
on the part of the ranchers, hacendados, etc. in Colombia, in Venezuela, 
and Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia-- because of the lack of a class with a coherent, 
unifying program, beyond the boundaries of this or that administrative 
district, previous vice-royalty.  The lack of class, and class coherence, 
sometimes known as "program," was the legacy of the Spanish colonization..
