Encountered him on Loren Gouldner's Meltdown list,-- generally a pretty
interesting list, with, however, some exceptions. Paula is on that list
too. Took up James Heartfeld (spelling?) argument that this crisis has to
be different from Marx's theory since there really wasn't capital
investment, or what of it there was, was more than offset by the flood of
wage-labor into the market with the entry of China, Vietnam etc. into the
world trading network.
The list itself got into a 5 week debate over what constitutes productive
and unproductive labor, whereas I argued that in the US, beginning in late
2005 and continuing through 06 and 07, there was an upsurge in capital
spending-- and an increase in wage rates and the overall wage-bill. Was
hoping Novus and others would provide some data from Europe or Asia-- no
such luck-- 5 weeks on productive vs. unproductive labor. Theoretician
critique thyself!
