Cuba has become a domestic political issue in the United States and on
U.S. policy toward Cuba, the Democrats have a slightly better political
position. They're in favor of lifting the travel and remittance limits
imposed by the Bush administration on Cuban-Americans going to see and
help their relatives on the island. While I don't support the Democrats,
it's only political clarity and common sense to recognize that on this
specific individual issue, the position of the Democrats is a better
one than that of the Republicans. One can discuss the motives of these
Democrats, but the difference in the political positions is quite clear
to anyone willing to see the difference.

Cuba is very much within this country, "our country" since there are
a million Cubans living in "our country", many of whom don't have
U.S. citizenship.

Of course, some people don't think these differences make a difference.
They aren't Cuban and don't have family and friends on the island and
those on the left who think that would obviously prefer that Cuba stay
poor, but unsullied by contact with people and ideas from the USA.

LOUIS PROYECT writes:
I was trying to engage with Charles's assertion that the Democrats had a
progressive domestic policy. Let me try to define the word domestic to
you since you may have forgotten somewhere along the line.

Domestic means within this country, like Kansas or Idaho. Cuba is not
within this country even though it was once run as a colony.

In other words, you came stumbling into a discussion about the Democrats
and domestic policy with Cuba on your mind as always. I don't mind if
you can't get Cuba off your mind. Life in American society is very tough
and we all need security blankets to get us through the day.

I only wish that you would at least find some slightly more plausible
context for holding forth on Cuba. You don't want to come off more
monomaniacal than usual, right?
