For most of its existence, the NAACP has been bankrolled and therefore controlled by white liberals.  It has "played a central role for nearly a century" opposing independent Black movements and leaders, including, iter alia, Marcus Garvey, Robert Williams, and Malcolm X.. Even though it is nominally a membership organization, it seems to function for the most part like any foundation-funded NGO.
