It's not just in "culture" that Afro-Mexicans have been ignored. They played a major role in the war of independence from Spain (1810-1820), and Vicente Guerrero, an Afro-Mexican and one of the generals in that war, became Mexico's second president.

I believe that a large number of the original Zapatists (1910-1919) were of part-African ancestry as well.
