Hi. It has been around long as I can remember, in a number of variants: "Did he ever make a payroll?", "when you get into the real world.." etc. It was always somewhere other than where we were. 
"The real America" is the conservatives out there,beyond the Hudson,  Nixon's "silent majority". I recall as a teen ager that when I came home enthusiastic about a large rally, my mother would put it down by saying that i was mostly Jews ( not "real" people).And then there are "real workers", the anti-intellectuals who do not read books and hope to open their own plumbing business. The main quality of reality is that it is always somewhere else... Best wishes, Dick
