ML: The appeal of the rhetoric at the top and the aspirations of the base
are dialectically related, aren't they? This is a symbiotic process, but
the latter doesn't disappear when there is no longer a functional use for
the former.
________

Really? I have yet to see a dialectic like that. Dialectic means that each
exists in, and pretty much only in, the organization of the other. I mean
in a revolutionary society like Russia was supposed to be, there was a
dialectic, or supposed to be, between party and class, and that dialectic
had an organization, a mediation, called soviets. Where is there any similar
organization, mediation in the "hope for change" sentiment around Obama?
Where's the real form of the dialectic, the critical social relationship
which we all know since Marx, a dialectic must assume?

So the rhetoric at the top exists in the aspiration at the base, and vice
versa? What are the components of the rhetoric (there's an oxymoron for
you), and of the "aspirations"?

I suggested some concrete areas for examining the rhetoric and the
aspirations, like the economy, like healthcare. So what are the mechanisms
for that symbiotic relationship? Popularity polls? Approval ratings?

As for the New Deal and the Good Neighbor Policy and the industrial union
movement and the USSR-- industrial unionism was an articulated goal of John
L. Lewis before 1932. The three major strikes, Minneapolis Teamsters, West
Coast Longeshoreman, Toledo Auto-Lite all took place in 1934-- a year or so
after FDR's inauguration, and didn't just drop from the sky. The struggle
led to the CIO, but the struggle existed well before the founding convention
of November 1935..

And the appeal of the Russian Revoluton to the countries of Latin America
had grown throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
