Louis, just two remarks:
First, in my book: The Adam Smith Problem: Reconciling Human Nature and
Society in 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments' and 'Wealth of Nations'
(Tauris Academic Studies, 2007 ) I showed that Smtih can neither be used
as a source or symbol of neoliberalism nor can he be seen as an
unconditional champion of markets. In fakt I showed in my book that
Smith envisages in longer term a society what we might call
communalism/communism.
Second,Giovanni Arrighi is, in my view a market romantic. How can you
separet capitalism from commodification and therefore from market. A
market based society can only be capitalism.
